Analysis of the vivo X80 Pro, a huge mobile in the camera
vivo X80 PRO 044

The vivo X80 Pro is the punch on the table from the company. A cry to say «I’m here!» that places this terminal as one of the most interesting so far this year. Above all, for the decisive bet that he makes for his camera, and that he has nothing to envy to the big names in the market. Much has to do with the collaboration with ZEISS, which crystallizes in several specific modes and in a glass lens that allows light to pass through much better. This bet translates into the design: the camera module protrudes quite a bit from the back and occupies the entire width, like a proud father who sticks out his chest for his son’s grades.

In addition, the bet is completed with a large AMOLED screen and a huge fingerprint reader under the screen that has the best performance and comfort that I have seen so far in a mobile. But, of course, not everything is good. Along the way, this vivo X80 Pro leaves out some features that I would have liked to see improved, such as its autonomy that complies with what is fair or the price, which shoots up to 1,200 euros. At the same level as other top brands on the market, although I would have liked to see a more competitive price, as Huawei did with its P10 at the time and that catapulted it as the main alternative to Samsung. We will see how the play goes live in this case. For now, I’ll tell you my impressions and analysis of this vivo X80 Pro.

Attractive design with very present cameras

The design of the vivo X80 Pro follows the line of the vivo V23 in the use of a material that provides a different and very attractive sensation. It’s about the fluorite crystal coating which we find in the back. In this case, it does not change color with the impact of sunlight, although the touch is very pleasant. It also highlights the part of the camera module. Don’t expect the vivo X80 Pro to hide this module. On the contrary, it protrudes quite a bit from the mobile and occupies the entire width of the smartphone, so anyone will be able to know that we are facing this live mobile. And in case you had any doubts, the legend is printed on the top: «Professional Photography», yes, in a more discreet way. In the camera module you will find several mentions of ZEISS, which is the company with which Vivo has partnered to improve photographic performance and which has also dealt with lens coatings. We will see this later.

vivo X80 PRO 028

The Asian company has opted for a more rounded design on the bezels, which is something that I personally appreciate since the grip is more comfortable. In addition, it combines very well with the curved design of the screen itself. In general, it is a well-balanced mobile whose elements fit perfectly, although along the way we have a glass-coated camera module, a fluorite back and metal frames. By the way, we are talking about a fairly large smartphone (they wanted to have a large screen) and somewhat heavy, 219 grams of weight. It is something that you should take into account if you have small hands, since you may have some more difficulty when handling it with one hand.

vivo X80 PRO 039

On the right side you have the buttons for power and volume up and down, while the left one appears completely clean. In the upper part we have that differential touch of a glass layer in which the “Professional Photography” appears silkscreened, while in the lower part there is both the USB type C connector as well as the speaker and the slot for the nanoSIM card. By the way, there is no possibility to expand the internal memory of the equipment.

The best fingerprint reader on the market

It may seem like a somewhat pretentious and risky statement, but to date I have not tried a more complete and versatile fingerprint reader. Its TThe reader is located below the mobile screen, and it has a very large surface, I would dare to say that it is double that of other models that opt for this layout. In fact, it’s so big that it opens up other creative options for taking advantage of the team. For example, we can integrate two application icons into the same fingerprint reader that allow us to open them directly when using our fingerprint.

And there is another option that can also give us a lot of play. We can create a secret space for applications that we can only enter if we use two fingers at the same time (there are several options to protect these apps). Without a doubt, a very interesting function if we want to avoid prying eyes at the content of our phone.

The best camera of the moment? It is very probable

And we fully enter what is the jewel in the crown of this vivo X80 Pro. Its camera. The Asian company has thrown the rest in this section and the truth is that the results of this photographic set are of a very high level in many fields. To achieve these results, vivo has created its own chip that helps improve the image processor, the vivo V1+. The truth is that it shows in the speed at which the photos are taken and the work that is then done to be able to, among other things, change the focus in portrait photos.

vivo X80 PRO 043

We start by reviewing the photographic set of the back:

– Samsung ISOCELL GNV 50 megapixel main sensor and focal aperture f / 1.57 with stabilization optics
– 48-megapixel Sony IMX598 secondary sensor with 114º wide-angle lens and f/2.2 focal aperture
– Sony IMX663 tertiary sensor for Portrait mode of 12 megapixels and focal aperture f / 1.85 with optical stabilization by gimbal system
– 8 megapixel quaternary sensor with 5x periscope lens and f/3.4 focal aperture

In all of this, the vivo collaboration with the legendary company ZEISS. And that is the first thing to note. Contrary to what has happened with several collaborations of this type, the hand of the German company is very noticeable. It is not a lip service, but a real collaboration that has led, among other things, to the lens of this camera being designed by ZEISS and made of glass, as opposed to the usual use of plastic. What does that mean on a practical level? That there is less color distortion and the direct impact of light does not create those flashes that can spoil a photo.

vivo X80 PRO 045

We also have a ZEISS proprietary mode to calibrate colors and create a more natural photo. In my experience I have to say that sometimes I have appreciated this mode and others it has seemed to me that the spectacular nature of the photo is lost. And it is that in my opinion there are occasions in which with a photo we do not seek to faithfully reproduce reality, but rather to create something new, something different and artistic.

The overall performance of the camera lives up to what is expected from a top rig. It responds very well to backlit photos and is capable of deliver sharp photos in ideal conditions, when night is falling or in dark rooms. Perhaps the highlight at this point is that both the ultra-wide and portrait sensors have more than remarkable performance in dark scenes. This is something that many cameras on the market often fail to do.

You can use the night mode that has a very successful performance. It does not happen as in many models in which the result is greatly exaggerated and the photo is quite artificial. In fact, there are two specific modes that have dazzled me that consist of the Astronomical to photograph the night sky and the Supermoon to portray this satellite.

A sensor for portrait that amazes

Speaking of the king of Rome, the dedicated sensor for portrait mode is a delight. Their performance is meant to remind professional cameras, and in fact we have several Bokeh modes inspired by various ZEISS proprietary formats. For example, we have a cinematic mode that has a very spectacular touch, the Biotar, the Sonnar, the Planar and the Distagon. Some opt for a more circular distortion of the background, another that works with the lights that are in the back, etc. It seems to me a feature that if you like photography will give you a lot of play.

With this sensor you have gimbal-type stabilization so that the photos always come out well oriented. That is, you can rotate the phone vertically and even loop it and the shot will always be oriented with the horizon. It is true that this feature makes more sense in video, but it is something to keep in mind.

And, in addition, you have the option of work with Bokeh after taking the photoboth the degree of aperture and the point at which to put the focus as foreground and the rest in the background.

vivo X80 PRO 038

Other sensor for zoom

The vivo X80 Pro has a fourth sensor that provides an optical zoom of up to five times. Again, it provides a good level of detail both in daytime conditions and in photos at night. The top is at 60 increases, although here we are already talking about a digital zoom whose results are nothing more than a mere curiosity when the photos are filled with noise.

vivo X80 PRO 016

Video recording, another strong point

And if we have talked about the quality of the camera to take photos, if we go to video, the vivo X80 Pro reaches the license plate. Starting with the use of the gimbal. The truth is that it is a hoot to be able to hold the mobile without having to worry if it is placed exactly vertically. In fact, it is a plus if we are recording action videos in which we are moving. Here ZEISS also includes another of its modes, that of cinematic video, which takes the format to ultrawide (the one that is broadcast in movie theaters). Be careful, it also records in this mode at 24fps, typical of movies. In normal mode we can choose to record at 60fps, which offers more fluid and realistic clips, but which have a less spectacular touch.

Refering to resolution, you can choose Full HD and go up to 8K, going through 4K or 720p if we want a clip that has less weight. There could also be different movie filters like the classic mode, the cyberpunk mode or even the dark knight to give it that decadent touch of Gotham City. Many options and a lot of game so you can enjoy the possibilities offered by the vivo X80 Pro camera.

Another point that attracts attention is the option to follow a subject during the recording to increase the sound in their direction.

vivo X80 PRO 019

An app that overwhelms at first

To control these options we have an app that can be a bit overwhelming at first. The options of this camera are many and putting them all in an application is not easy. There are options that can be lost if you don’t spend a good time discovering the corners of this application. Of course, I think it organizes the basic options well at first glance, such as access to ZEISS mode (for this less spectacular color calibration), HDR or automatic scene selection through AI.

But, for example, a very cool option like automatically following a subject when we want to take a photo or video is quite hidden by having to hit the settings button and then again to More settings. I have to admit that the first few days of using the smartphone go unnoticed, and I think it is something that can happen quite easily.

vivo X80 PRO 031

Where it seems to me that the application is right is creating a separate mode for high-resolution photos, that is, those that take full advantage of the 50MP main camera. It makes sense here if you want to take photos that you then crop in a certain area, since otherwise the 12-megapixel photos that are created with the automatic photos will suffice.

vivo X80 PRO 02

Where I see the biggest flaw in this app is in portrait mode. The ZEISS filters are quite attractive (especially the cinematic one), and it seems to me that it is not at all obvious to have to open them through a small diamond-shaped icon on the right side. I think it would be much more playable if they had created a larger and more representative icon or even some small cards to access them. The one that I do like a lot is the pro mode, with the different icons to control the exposure to light or the white balance very clear and also others to switch between the ultra wide angle and the telephoto lenses.

By the way, in the more tab you can access the Astronomical and Supermoon mode as well as the Dual View mode to record what happens in the rear and front camera at the same time or a mode to take a group portrait.

vivo X80 PRO 022

A camera for selfies to match

Precisely, if we talk about selfies, the camera with a resolution of 20 megapixels meets with a good note. I liked its performance in night photos and also the fact that it does not exaggerate the beauty mode, something that I have criticized for a while (especially in mobiles from a Chinese company). Here the emphasis is on naturalness and that is appreciated, even if I later have to face my -many- imperfections. The mode designed to take group portraits using AI is not bad, although in general it seems to me that it is a camera that fulfills the role but without great fanfare.

vivo X80 PRO 014

As for the portrait mode, you have to know that by default it will not generate that rear camera blur. And you can’t change it later on the photo in the gallery either. What you have to do here is press on the icon with the f and then select the aperture (at a lower value the blur will be more exaggerated). Remember that it is something that is managed through software, so do not expect spectacular results.

vivo X80 PRO 09

Big screen to enjoy videos and games

The vivo X80 Pro features a large screen, 6.78 inches. That is, do not expect a very compact team. It is a curved type panel, which creates that spectacular point of feeling that it is a larger screen than it really is as it is not crossed by the frames. Of course, keep in mind that there is a big but to these panels: the screen is much more expensive, so you will have to pay dearly if at any time you need to repair it.

It’s about a panel type AMOLED LTPO. And this means? It is a technology that is beginning to be deployed in several top models on the market and that, in theory, improves the autonomy of the mobile. And I say in theory because the truth is that it is not something that I have noticed in this vivo X80 Pro, as I will tell you later. What I have noticed is the good color treatment and its brightness, which allows you to enjoy the content even in sunlight. And the refresh rate of 120Hz, something that has already become a classic in mobiles of more than 300 euros. This refresh rate is used to make you see more fluid both the animations of the apps when opening and closing or when going through the windows and when moving through the mobile menus. The difference compared to traditional 60Hz panels is quite noticeable, especially at first, although the eye quickly gets used to it. It is something that you should take into account because it also uses up the battery faster, so you might still want to think about changing it to 60Hz.

vivo X80 PRO 03

Raw power and memory

In the power section, the vivo X80 Pro meets what is expected of a top terminal. In its entrails we have a processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, together with Vivo’s own photo-focused processor that I have already mentioned before. Together with a 12 GB RAM memory, the performance of the equipment is fluid at all times. Both with typical applications such as WhatsApp, YouTube or Twitch as well as including powerful games of first line. Of course, it must be said that this mobile heats up quite easily when you give it a go, especially when using the camera to record video. However, I am aware that I have tested this mobile in summer, and the high temperatures do not help the equipment to be well cooled.

On the other hand, in the field of internal memory we have 256 GB, a capacity that must be sufficient to store our files, photos and videos. By the way, keep in mind that with this model you do not have the option to expand it through a microSD card. In the field of connections, there are no big surprises. We have WiFi 6, that is, the latest faster and more stable WiFi protocol, and Bluetooth 5.2 to connect different peripherals such as headphones without cables.

vivo X80 PRO 047

Somewhat weak autonomy and fast charging

And we come to the weakest point of this terminal, which I have also experienced with the vivo V23. It’s about autonomy. According to official live data, the mobile has a 4,700 milliamp battery. In principle, a sufficient capacity, but with the large screen and the use I usually make of the smartphone (some occasional videos and working with chat apps) the autonomy falls short at the end of the day. It is rare the occasion in which I have not had to plug in the mobile for a while in the afternoon.

This is helped by its fast charging system. The vivo X80 Pro can be charged at 80W, that is, having the mobile fully charged in about half an hour. It also has a fast charge of 50W in case of doing it without cables. The company markets a nice charger in the form of a stand to use this wireless charging. Of course, in my experience I have to say that many times I have chosen to use the same cable when I wanted to have the mobile charged faster. The ideal would have been to achieve the same charging speed with and without cables.

vivo X80 PRO 049

Comfortable interface that is not very loaded

The vivo X80 Pro works through the Android operating system in its version 12, with the Funtouch OS brand’s own software layer. My opinion is that it is a quite attractive interface, which does not load the operating system with many functions and applications that hinder it. I think the brand does a good job at this point and also adds some interesting features, such as ways to take a screenshot through a live via Super Capture.

vivo X80 PRO 01

Price and opinions

The vivo X80 Pro can now be purchased in Spanish stores for a price of 1,200 euros. This is the cost for the only configuration available with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory. In short, this is a mobile capable of making its rivals tremble thanks to a spectacular camera that fights to be the best on the market. I really liked the performance and options of the portrait sensor and its gimbal stabilizer, with which you can do amazing things when recording video. On the other hand, the main weak point of this mobile is its autonomy, which is not enough to complete a whole day without having to go through the plug. Of course, it is compensated (at least in part) with a fast charge with which you can recharge the mobile in half an hour. In short, a great phone that will have to fight with the little name that it still has in Spain, since 1,200 euros is a very large investment.
