Ericsson, Thales and Qualcomm will test 5G from space

Swedish manufacturer Ericsson, French aerospace company Thales and chipmaker Qualcomm plan to work together to develop out-of-this-world 5G connectivity. through a network of satellites in Earth orbit.

Following the research, which included various studies and simulations, the tech trio plans to start testing and validation of 5G non-terrestrial networks (5G NTN) focused on smartphone use cases.

What do the tests bet on? Basically, that in the future smartphones can connect to the 5G network no matter where they are.being able to provide global coverage for mobile broadband data services, including those remote places such as seas, oceans or fields, where operators are usually unable to offer service.

Such widespread connectivity would boost roaming capabilities for 5G smartphone subscribers.. As well as enabling global connectivity for 5G use cases in the transportation, energy, and healthcare sectors.

Likewise, the space-based network could also be used as backup support for terrestrial networks in the event of major network outages or disasters.

Along the same lines, Erik Ekudden, Senior Vice President of Ericsson, noted:

This cooperation will be an important milestone in the history of communications, as the end result could mean that no matter where you are on Earth, in the middle of an ocean or in the most remote forest, high-level connectivity, secure and cost-effective will be available through collaborative 5G satellite and terrestrial connectivity.

The purpose of testing and the role of each company

The main mission of the tests will be validate various technology components needed to enable non-terrestrial 5G networks, including a 5G smartphone, satellite payload, and 5G network pieces on the ground. It also seeks to validate that 5G NTN can be supported in a smartphone form factor, enabling the 5G smartphone of tomorrow to effectively become a satellite phone.

What will each company do then? Ericsson plans to examine a 5G virtual RAN (vRAN) stack, modified to handle the propagation of radio signals (what happens with 5G radio waves traveling through the vacuum of space and Earth’s atmosphere) through satellites. Fast-moving LEO.

In turn, Thales plans to verify a 5G radio satellite payload suitable for deployment on LEO satellites.

While Qualcomm Technologies will develop test phones to check that future 5G smartphones can access 5G NTN.
