My experience with HUAWEI MateBook D 16 laptop

My experience with HUAWEI MateBook D 16 laptop

After the problems in the mobile market with the US veto, HUAWEI has focused on expanding the family of devices under its brand. And it has supported products in which it has already stood out in recent years, such as laptops. now comes the HUAWEI MateBook D16 to show that this rhythm is maintained with proposals that seek to solve the current problems of users who need power and solvency in the office and outside of it. A 16-inch laptop with a full keyboard and the latest generation of Intel Core processors that also comes loaded with software to improve day-to-day issues such as video calls. Or as office professionals say: of the calls.

I have tested this HUAWEI MateBook D 16 as a work laptop for two weeks. To tell you my impressions I have taken this laptop from one place to another on my trips. And from now on I assure you that it is a powerful and very capable laptop whether you work writing or with tables and many numbers. I have even been able to play more than one game on it. I will tell you how this day to day has gone so that you can get to know this laptop a little better throughout my analysis.

Huge screen with hardly any frames

It is the first thing that has surprised me as soon as I unfold this HUAWEI MateBook D 16. The 16-inch panel is one of the real protagonists in this laptop. And it is for several reasons. The first is the size. Or rather, how a 16-inch panel manages to fit into this laptop. It’s huge and a joy for games and movies. Although it is also suitable for working with various documents and windows. Ultimately your 16:10 format gives us some extra space in the vertical to see more content on the screen.

And it does all this in a body that is traditionally intended for 15.6-inch laptops. Thus, it takes advantage of 90% of the laptop lid to show the panel. Or, in other words, There are hardly any frames on this part of the HUAWEI MateBook D 16. That is why the image is the protagonist.

During these days of testing, in addition, I have been checking the experience both connected to the current and not. Playing with the power saving and high performance modes to see how they affect the screen. And the truth is that it is a very bright panel that saves any situation if we play with the brightness.

Where it is clear that it is a panel for more office-focused work is in its 2K resolution of 1,920 x 1,200. More than enough to work with images in detail, but without reaching the resolutions and pixel densities more typical of design, editing, or with a refresh rate more typical of gaming. There’s also an undoubted mark on creating a work panel, and that’s its low blue light emission certification. Something that, after my years of use and abuse of panels of all kinds during marathon days of work and leisure, I no longer appreciate. But if it is certified by TÜV, it is clear that at least the degree of blue light emission is reduced. And, if you don’t know what it is, just tell you that blue light influences visual fatigue and, above all, when it comes to producing melatonin in our brain, which is the hormone with which we fall asleep. Basically you should not get tired of being in front of this HUAWEI MateBook D 16. I certainly have not suffered from this issue.

This panel could stand out for reaching a little more resolution or pixel density. But considering the «professional» nature of the team, it seems that the choice is more than justified.

Yes, the full keyboard returns. Although with some but

Has it not become clear to you that the HUAWEI MateBook D 16 is designed for those who work in the office? Well take a full keyboard. And when I say complete I mean full number pad, such as desktop computer keyboards. With all the numbers to the right, their mathematical symbols and some more added. A whole comfort to not depend on independent keyboards wherever you work with this laptop. If you work with numbers you have this addition designed for you.

But there is more. If, like me, you spend the day pounding keys and writing texts, HUAWEI wanted to improve this writing experience as well. He has done it through a cushioning system that ensures that spending more hours typing will not cause finger pain or discomfort. And the truth is that I have enjoyed the system, above all, because of how quiet it is. Accustomed to my mechanical keyboard on the desktop computer, the change is more than remarkable. Because of the noise and also because of the softness of the typing. A change that makes it especially comfortable for you and others if you work with your laptop in a coffee shop. By the way, the key travel is now 1.5mm, so it is more comfortable but it also helps to make it more unequivocal, knowing at all times when you press a key correctly and when not. Something that I have been able to verify these days compared to other keyboards with less travel.

Here the only but that I have taken out during my experience is in the layout and design of the keyboard in general. As I tell you, all these technologies make pressing comfortable. But the design has bothered me for a few days until I accustomed to different key sizes. And it is that, although it may not seem like it, details such as a smaller Enter key size has made my writing difficult these days by making a mistake and pressing the “ç” key instead of the enter or “¡” instead of delete. In my opinion, a smaller size of the main keys would allow a more equal distribution of space for other keys, thus favoring the experience. Of course, after several days typing on this keyboard it is easy to get used to it, except for some mistake.

Another but that I have taken out in this aspect is the backlight. The surface of the keys lets the light from the backlight escape quite a bit. The funny thing is that at the intermediate level of brightness these leaks shine more than the letters themselves. So the mode is somewhat useless. It’s best to have the brightness all the way up (although those slits under the keys are also brighter) or not at all.

By the way, I don’t want to forget the extra function keys they have added in the number pad space. About the numbers, HUAWEI has seen fit to add keys with specific functions. And some are really useful when you learn that they are there. For example, the one that invokes the calculator. It is a simple idea but the sea of useful and decisive. There is also direct access to a very complete search engine, a button to minimize the screen (here the main utility that I have seen has been to quickly hide the information on the screen before the eyes of curious people) and a button to block the webcam (have I Having said that it is a laptop specially designed for calls, video calls and office experiences?). Quite a point in favor that I hope will be maintained and developed in future versions. Full keyboards and special function keys should be a must on laptops.

Power to move office and editing programs

In my job as a technology journalist I need several tools from different areas to carry out analyzes like the one you are reading right now. From a word processor to write down all my thoughts and experiences with the laptop, to PDF reader programs to check specifications, programs like Adobe Photoshop to retouch the photos you see between these words, and even a video editing program to take content to our YouTube channel All this also going through a lot of open tabs in my internet browser and a program to be coordinated with the rest of the newsroom team.

Well, have the Latest generation of Intel Core processors in this HUAWEI MateBook D 16 makes all this possible. And not only have I seen that it is fast in details such as moving applications, jumping from one to another or moving heavy content such as Adobe Premiere with my video of the week. It is also noticeable in other day-to-day details such as taking just a couple of seconds to boot up and start working with the laptop or moving heavy documents just without breaking a sweat.

And when I talk about disheveled, I mean that there is not only power, but also a very useful cooling and ventilation system. The HUAWEI MateBook D 16 is also quiet in this respect. So there is no problem working even in a library. Between the silence of the keyboard of its fans, nobody is going to find out what you are typing. I have not carried out this test, but with much less tasks other notebooks start to chug. And that the design and structure of this HUAWEI is not one of those that offer that sensation of fresh or cold as soon as you hold it in your hands.

In my case, I have tested the model with a processor Intel Core 12 Gen i7-12700H accompanied by 16GB of LPDDR4x type RAM. A pass even if the RAM memory standard is not the most advanced on the market. But between that and the solid-state hard drive (512 GB), the speed and solvency of this laptop is more than remarkable. Especially with programs, Internet browsers and work tools that are not particularly demanding.

But be careful, it’s not bad either if you play a little game between work hours and work. The HUAWEI MateBook D 16 arrives with an Intel Iris Xe graphics card that solves games like Fall Guys or Fortnite without any problem. I’ve even tried creating a dinosaur park in Jurassic Park Evolution. You will not be able to put all the graphic demands to the maximum, but maintaining a FullHD resolution, lowering shadows and other requirements, you will be able to enjoy many of these titles. And there yes. The cooling system will make its appearance. But still the laptop manages to be quiet and comfortable if you don’t extend the gaming hours too much or you are not playing in the heat wave with the laptop.

In short, a laptop that moves everything that is thrown at it with ease and efficiency within the field of office work. With some extra if you are not too demanding with the graphic section, where the graphics card complies but does not stand out. Enough to edit photos and videos for YouTube. But not to play like a professional.

Many extras to work comfortably

If it is still not clear to you where the shots are going with this HUAWEI MateBook D 16, I have to tell you that it is loaded with tools for office activities. Details that go beyond that full keyboard or function buttons. In fact, there is a tool that has particularly caught my attention.

I mean the software and extras around the webcam. It is a FullHD camera with a resolution of 1080 pixels that works really well. Manufacturers have finally realized that webcams are useful now that everyone teleworks or needs to connect at any time and place to a call or a meeting.

Here Huawei has put the batteries especially with this video calls. They have incorporated software that can be used in the most popular tools of the moment (Microsoft Teams and Zoom) to blur the background and keep the subject in focus. In addition, they have added FollowCam if you are a restless ass or do presentations where you move around the scene. With this your face and your body (even with two other users) are always in the frame even if you move through space. But what has surprised me the most has been the correction of the look, as if it were an Instagram filter, to avoid looking like you’re cross-eyed. You have control to apply all these functions from the HUAWEI control menu, from where I have been able to verify how well it works. And after a few tests I stay with the automatic framing, since the background makes a crop that does not always look correct and the retouching of the eyes only raises this part of the face without really modifying the direction of the eyes and solving the problem. Curious but still needs filming and improvement.

But beware, the HUAWEI MateBook has more aces up its sleeve in the form of software. It has also improved the sound for these video calls, being able to better manage the sound of the environment when applying noise cancellation technology. All this so that your voice is heard more clearly and differentiated from the noise, as well as to isolate yourself and better hear everything they say to you.

And the same with other tools such as managing your HUAWEI mobile from your laptop by connecting it just by bringing it closer to the NFC port. Or have the headphones of this same manufacturer connected to the laptop and the mobile at the same time to use them in each one when appropriate. And all the tools super device and other managements that have been added to this laptop. Of course, most of them can only be enjoyed if you are a faithful follower of the brand and have other HUAWEI devices. Yes it’s him case you can have everything at hand on the laptop desktop to even access notifications, apps or contents of your mobile from the laptop screen. If your entire work environment is HUAWEI, the ecosystem they have built is really capable of having everything on screen.

The best thing about the battery is its charger

I am not used to working on a laptop without being connected to the power. In the end, I always want and/or need performance for the tasks I carry out. However, I have tried to see how far I can squeeze this HUAWEI MateBook D 16. And the truth is that it meets as an average laptop in terms of autonomy. Considering how big it is and how light it is, the battery offers half a day of work without problems. Most of these days, especially during the writing process, I have extended its life with low power mode. With this I have achieved almost 5 hours of use browsing the Internet and with a text document open. Enough for these tasks when you are on a trip or in a place without a plug nearby.

But what I have enjoyed the most in the battery area on this laptop is its fast charging and, without a doubt, its charger. It is the same size as that of the mobiles of the brand itself. So it is compact, light and useful for one or another device. Something that makes the set even more transportable.

considering the weight of 1.7 kg, despite the 16-inch screen, it is a light and portable laptop. I miss that feeling of freshness of aluminum. But the finishes are resistant and colorful. HUAWEI maintains that habit of imitating Apple MacBooks with straight lines and a gray metallic finish. But it is more than satisfactory on a day-to-day basis. Except for one detail: the fingerprints are marked on the lid. A pain for those of us with greasy fingers.

Conclusions after more than a week of use

HUAWEI MateBook D 16 is HUAWEI’s best large-screen laptop if you are looking for solvency and functionality inside and outside the office. You must be clear that it is a laptop for work, in case its screen, its graphics card, its numeric keypad and all the software and connectivity do not make it clear to you. It is prepared to work with external monitors, with your mobile, with your headphones and even to assist you in calls. You may need some development on some of these tools, but not many laptops or manufacturers include all of these features. Or they do it through abusive and annoying programs. Here HUAWEI has been able to apply it in a useful, minimalist control center that goes unnoticed as another icon in the toolbar.

It is a solvent laptop, capable and stands out in some details such as a large screen, a good cooling system and the power to move any program in an office. Even giving a pulse to certain design tools like Premiere or Photoshop.

And he does it with a price of 1,300 euros. Justified when you take into account the processing power, the screen and all the extras it adds. And it is that it is updated even with Windows 11. A good option if you need a computer as powerful and capable as the one in the office, but outside the office.
